All Directions turned one of Norman Whitfield’s earlier productions into a Temptations masterpiece. “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” had first been recorded by The Undisputed Truth, but Whitfield reimagined it for The Temptations as a long, cinematic psychedelic-soul track built around atmosphere, tension, and groove. The nearly 12-minute album version became the centerpiece of All Directions and helped give the group one of the most powerful and award-winning recordings of their career.
